Crossing the Pyrenees from Hendaye to Banyuls

The approximately 1,100 kilometres of GR 10 trails that lead hikers from Hendaye to Banyuls cross all the regions and valleys of the Pyrenees. In the Catalan mountains, the rural campsite Les Opillères is an ideal break between the Carlit and the refuge of the Carança.

Launch yourself into the crossing of the Pyrenees, play leapfrog with the mountains, revel in the Pyrenean vegetation: high altitude lawns, rhododendron, blueberries, heather, beech forests and hook pines. In the sky, bearded vultures fly; on land, grazing sheep, horses and cows. The lucky ones will be able to hear or observe the capercaillie in the forests.

Between the peaks of Carlit at nearly 3000 meters above sea level and the beach of Banyuls-sur-Mer, the GR 10 surveys the Canigou massif. Its highest point, the peak of Canigou, is not on the marked path, but at 2784 meters it reveals a unique spectacle: to the north, France; to the south, Spain; to the west, the massif; to the east, the Mediterranean …

Ideally located 200m from the GR10 route, the rural campsite Les Opillères welcomes you in a restful setting from June to September. Close to the campsite, you will find various services: bakery, grocery store, butcher’s shop to provide you with supplies. Why not take a break and climb for a day the Cambre d’Aze whose summit is 2750m high.
